Wouldn’t it be great if a foolproof plan existed to guarantee success? You know, one that we could study to ensure success at everything we attempted. After all, that way I could be assured of a Pulitzer Prize and you, the coach, could be guaranteed national championships and Schutt Sports Coach of the Year awards presented by this magazine. Sounds nice, huh? This reminds me of an interview I conducted while a sports writer in New Orleans with then-Tulane head coach, Tommy Bowden, in 1998. Now Coach Bowden, who is currently entering his fifth-year at Clemson, had just come off an impressive 7-4 season during his first year with the Green Wave (1997), a team that had not enjoyed too many seasons of success.
