With a 29-26 come-from-behind victory over then-No. 10 Bethel College (Minn.), John Gagliardi of St. John’s University (Minn.) surpassed Eddie Robinson to become college football’s all-time winningest coach with 409 wins. The 77-year-old Gagliardi, who has coached at St. John’s (Minn.) for 51 seasons, has averaged eight wins a year in his 55 years as a head coach. Grambling State’s Eddie Robinson averaged seven wins per year in a career that spanned 57 years – all at GSU. For me, this record-breaking event is monumental. Unless Valdosta State’s Chris Hatcher, 30, who was 45-5 after four years with one regular season game remaining in 2003, can keep his momentum for the next 40 years, we probably won’t be seeing Gagliardi’s record broken any time soon.
