Page 4Build the Program, Not the Playbook The whistle stops, the lights go dark and, for once, you have time to think. Spend it on the things that will still be true in November. Summer is the great paradox of football coaching. The whistle stops blowing, the stadium lights go dark and the pressure changes shape. During the season you live in five-minute increments; in June and July you have hours of uninterrupted time to reflect.
The danger is spending that luxury on the micro-details of a playbook that will change by Week 3 anyway. The most successful coaches don’t treat the offseason as a chance to add plays. They treat it as a chance to build the infrastructure of the program—the teaching, the leadership and the culture that everything else sits on. BECOME A BETTER TEACHER If you want a better team in the fall, become a better teacher in June. Don’t spend the whole summer tweaking scheme; spend it auditing how you communicate.
• Are your drill explanations clear and concise, or are you delivering lectures on the field? • Do the players on your depth chart understand why a fundamental matters, or are they just running through lines? • Have you translated your complex concepts into simple, repeatable cues a player can recall instantly when fatigue sets in? If you want a better team in the fall, become a better teacher in June. LET LEADERSHIP COME FROM THE LOCKER ROOM You cannot coach every player on every play of a Friday night.
Summer is where you build player-led accountability. If leadership only comes from the whistle, your team will fold under pressure the moment you aren’t in their ear. Give your seniors real authority during summer workouts: let them set the standards, lead film sessions and call out low energy. Your job in July is to step back just far enough to see who steps up. Page 5DESIGN ENERGY, NOT JUST CONDITIONING Conditioning is easy; anyone can run players into the ground. Designing an environment where athletes want to keep pushing when burnout is closing in is the real art. Break up the monotony of summer lifting with competition—tug-of-war tournaments, relay races, field-day challenges. High energy in August is built on intentional culture work in July. So take a step back this offseason.
